TASK 1

Read the following text about Paul, the octopus and then read the sentences (1-7) following it. Mark a sentence A if it is true according to the text. Mark it B if it is false. Mark it C if there is not enough information in the text to decide if the sentence is true or not.

PAUL THE WORLD CUP OCTOPUS DIES IN HIS TANK IN GERMANY

Paul the octopus, an unlikely star of the 2010 World Cup who predicted the outcome of seven matches, has died at an aquarium in Germany. Staff at the Sea Life centre in Oberhausen said they were devastated to learn that he had passed away during the night.

Paul made his name by successfully choosing a mussel from one of two boxes bearing the flags of competing nations. Octopuses rarely live beyond two years so his death was not unexpected. Paul was two-and-a-half years old and had been hatched at another centre at Weymouth in England in 2008.

The centre’s manager, Stefan Porwoll, said that Paul had correctly guessed the outcomes of seven of eight of Germany’s World Cup matches, including their defeats, and had “enthused people across every continent”.

As the tournament progressed, the octopus’s knack of selecting the correct box drew increasing interest from the world’s media, culminating in his choice of Spain as the eventual winner. He became an instant hero in Spain, and there was a growing request to have him put on display at the Madrid zoo.

Amid the euphoria, he was even made an honorary citizen of a Spanish town before being made an ambassador for England’s 2018 World Cup bid.

The Obehausen centre said he had seemed fine when last checked on Monday night but was found dead on Tuesday morning.

“We are consoled by the knowledge that he enjoyed a good life,” Mr Porwoll said.

TASK 3

Read the following article about an April Fools prank and then read the half sentences that follow the text. Your task is to match the half sentences based on the information in the text. Match the numbers (16-21) with the letters (A-J) as in the example (0). Remember that there are three extra letters that you will not need.

STUDENT PRANKS TEACHER WITH AWKWARD SPEAKERPHONE PREGNANCY CALL

Stephen Barrows, a macroeconomics professor at Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, decided to play an April Fools’ prank on his students by surprising them with a pop quiz. Little did he know that his students would be the ones pranking him.

Stephen has a very strict cell phone policy: if a student’s phone rings during the lesson, he or she must answer it on speakerphone so everyone can hear. But on April 1, 2014, one of his students made sure she received a call he would never forget – and half of the class knew exactly what was coming next.

Taylor Nefcy had a friend pretend to call her from the Pregnancy Resource Center with news about her test results. Obviously, she had to answer the call on speaker while the teacher was listening and smiling. The fake doctor congratulated Taylor on her results, saying that the tests have come back positive. Barrows’ facial expression slowly turned from amusement to shock. After finishing the call, the teacher began to apologise but Taylor was eager to assure him that everything was okay

Salvation came with the punchline when she added: “I’ve been expecting this and I know what I’m going to call the baby. The first name will be April and the last name will be Fools.”

Suddenly, the teacher and the students burst into laughter. Later, the teacher told his student: “Bonus points. That was awesome. You don’t understand the relief.”

TASK 4

Read the following text about an ancient Roman festival, the Carmentalia and then read the sentences following it. Some words are missing from the sentences. Fill the gaps in each sentence (22-30) with one word that corresponds to what the text says. There is an example (0) at the beginning.

THE CARMENTALIA

The Goddess Carmenta is celebrated on two dates of the Roman calendar (January 11 and 15), and each day is called Carmentalia. These dates should be considered as two separate festivals, rather than one festival extending over this period, yet it is not clear us today why two such holidays should be so close to each other.

The festival celebrates Carmenta, who is the Goddess of women’s health, birthing, and prophecy. She is the inventor of letters, as Minerva is the inventor of numbers. She tells the future through her sister Porrima, and reveals the past through her sister Postvorta, while Carmenta knows all that happens in the present.

Together the three Carmenae sisters are the Good Fates, the Three Mothers, and the Muses. The very name of Carmenta was given to song (carmen) and Latin terms for poetry, charms, and speaking-in-tongues. With her songs she would cure the ill and taught women how to care for themselves and their children. Her sanctuaries have become places for women and children to receive traditional medical treatments using herbs and music.

The most ancient sanctuary in all of Rome was located at the foot of the Capitoline Hill. It is still visited today where people gather water from her sacred spring. It was in this sanctuary that Carmenta appeared to Numa Pompilius in his dreams and instructed Numa on how to communicate with the Gods.

As one of the oldest Goddesses of Rome, whose worship was established by Numa, Carmenta was never represented by an image. It was enough to feel her presence in the sacred sanctuary below the Capitoline. In the same way, Vesta is never represented by an image but only by living fire.

You are going to read an article about climate change. Some words are missing from the text. Use the words in brackets to form the words that fit in the gaps (10-17). There might be cases when you do not have to change the word in brackets. Use only one word for each gap. There is an example (0) at the beginning.

A HOT TOPIC

Climate change is one of the most serious challenges (0)___facing___ (FACE) our world today. Our planet is experiencing significant and accelerated climate change that began over a century ago. Most (10)__________ (SCIENCE) agree that the planet is warming up faster than ever because of the vast amount of greenhouse gases that humans are pumping into the atmosphere. This includes (11)__________ (ACTIVE) such as burning fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas), driving cars and cutting down forests. Many of us have seen – and even experienced – the effects of climate change.

But it is not just about (12)__________ (EXTREME) weather like floods, droughts and hurricanes. Slower and (13)__________ (LITTLE) noticeable changes in our climate have the potential to (14)__________ (COMPLETE) change the way we live.

The good news is that in Paris in December 2015, 195 countries (practically the whole world) agreed the first ever legally-binding global deal to tackle climate change. In the EU and around the world, every (15)__________ (GOVERN), every company and every individual is already working to tackle its causes and adapt to the changes it brings. We all have a part to play because climate change is a global problem which can affect each one of us.

We all share one planet and the changes we make in one place can affect others far away. You could say our (16)__________ (BEHAVE) makes a lasting impression, like a footprint. And this footprint is not really (17)__________ (DIFFER) from carbon footprint. So, through our actions and choices, each one of us can take steps to leave smaller footprints and help tackle climate change.

Dear Sir or Madam,

I have read your advertisement and I would like to apply for the job as a student helper because I like dealing with children and I would like to gain experience.

I think I am enthusiastic and creative. I would be perfect for the job because I have already taken part in camps. I had to organise some programmes for kids. I taught them how to draw and build model houses.

I have two questions about the job. What is the exact date of the camp? Also, how much money would you pay?

Thank you for your answer.

Yours sincerely,

Adam Smith

A mintalevélben például én a második szempontnál alaposan kifejtettem, miért is lennék megfelelő a meghirdetett állásra. Egy sima: „I would be perfect for the job because I love children.” nem lett volna megfelelő.

TASK 2

I have lost all feelings towards my boyfriend (we’ve been together for 2 years). I keep breaking up with him which always breaks my heart but somehow we end up getting back together because he won’t accept it. But I have feelings for someone else. MINTAMEGOLDÁS:

Melanie:

This is a really difficult situation and I can understand how you might feel. It’s never easy to break up but I think in the end you’ll have to bring this decision.

Almost the same thing happened to me a few years ago. I couldn’t break up with my girlfriend because I didn’t want to lose her. But then I just had to do it. It was difficult at first but later I got better.

If you really love him, you have to be honest with him. Just tell him how you feel and hope that he’ll understand it. Especially if you have somebody else in your life. It’s not fair with him to stay together if you don’t mean it seriously. Your boyfriend might be upset at first, but he will calm down later.

I hope I could help you with my advice. Please write how things turn out.

Best wishes,

Adam

Magyarán: formális avagy informális-e a levél.

Egy tanácsadás végén az „I hope I could help you with my advice” mindig jó, és esetleg hozzá lehet tenni, hogy „please write how things turn out” – ha még van szólehetőségünk.
